Ninety Nine
Friday night we ventured out into the cold to hit up the Ninety Nine Restaurant in Waltham, as its only about seven minutes from our home. We used the call ahead seating to bypass the long lines. We were very pleasantly pleased with our experience - the service was excellent and we were seated in a quiet corner booth with our own flat screen TV. The selection at the 99 is very good; we both opted for the Bistro Value meal - three courses for $11.99. I started with the Roasted Corn Chowder, moved to the Chicken Milano, and finished with the Tuxedo Brownie. Kim began with the Bistro Salad, selected the Roasted Chicken & Vodka Penne as her entree, and had the Double Decker Carrot Cake for her dessert. We also snuck in an order of the Toasted Raviolis. Everything was excellent - the chowder, vodka penne, and raviolis really impressed. The service was also great, as our waiter was both freindly and courteous. Overall, while the 99 does have a chain restaurant atmosphere, the food is always top notch and the price tage can't be beat (for those of you who aren't from the area, the 99 is mainly a New England restaurant chain started in downtown Boston back in the 50s, and now has over 100 locations). When we're looking to stay local and not overly spend on a night out, its one of our favorties.

Pigalle
Boston100 returned to Pigalle this weekend, and our visit was so great that we moved the restaurant's ranking up from #19 to #6. Every course was superb and the service was excellent. Two thumbs up for the Lobster Bolognese. I'd go back in a minute just for that entree.

Plaza III
Thursday I visited Plaza III - The Kansas City Steakhouse, with some old friends for lunch. The atmosphere was very cool, with white linen covered tables overlooking Faneuil Hall. The service was mediocre, but the food was excellent. The Caesar Salad was well above par, and the Filet Mignon was divine (although on the small side. Pricing is very reasonable for this mid-range steak house, plus its easy to get to by public transportation. I'll definitely go back, especially for lunch. One tip: Plaza III has outdoor seating in the summer, and makes for a great spot to people watch.

Union Bar & Grille
Friday night we headed out to Union Bar and Grille in the South End. Union is a stylish lounge serving American comfort food in the up and coming Washington Street district. Overall we had a great time - the food was outstanding and the service was superb. Personally, we highly suggest the Hanger Steak, one of the more flavorful steak cuts we've tried in recent memory. Not to be missed. Reservations are suggested. While we were lucky enough to get a reservation that same morning, a line still formed to get a table at this hot dining establishment.

Stellina
For New Year's Eve we decided to stay local and went to Stellina. Much like our first visit, the traditional cuisine was excellent and the service was good. However, the dining room was a little over-packed, as we often got bumped by waiters and other patrons on their way by. We didn't let it negatively affect our night though, which was highlighted by a nice bottle of Barolo, the wine special of the night.
