We had a nice getaway to Cape Cod this past weekend. We stayed at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster and we were very impressed. On Friday night, we headed over to the Chatham Bars Inn Dining Room for our anniversary - the CBI is regarded as one of the finest hotels in all of New England. The Inn serves up traditional American fare with a New England touch. We both ordered our favorite meals - I opted for a two pound lobster and Kim went for the Filet Mignon. We started with a Beat Salad and Shrimp Cocktail. Everything was beyond outstanding, including the wines we selected from the impressive list, the service, and the live piano music. However, the desserts actually were just mediocre. The price was high, but worth it for one of the best meals we have had in a while. Other Cape Cod recommendations - Truro Vineyards, the Cape Cod Potato Chip Factory, and Cape Cod League Baseball.
We decided to try out Craigie Street Bistrot on Saturday after hearing some good things. On one note, we found the food to be outstanding. On the other hand, we had trouble parking, the air conditioning was a little subpar, the service was average, the menu was limited, and the portions were small. However, the food alone made the trip a good one. While some of us weren't feeling particularly adventurous, we each enjoyed our entrees and the appetizers and desserts were excellent as well. I suggest the Wellfleet Clams with Almonds, the Short Ribs, and the Chocolate Brownie. Our complements to the chef.
On Saturday night we braved the traffic issues and headed out to Lucca in the North End. The food was "stupendous" as Kim put it, and we were very pleased with each of the courses and the wine. The service was mezze mezze, and the dining room was cool, but much too loud. Overall, the food made up for any other minor shortcomings, and we had a great time. Still one of the better restaurants in all of the North End.
To celebrate some landmark birthdays, we headed down to the South End to hit up Sibling Rivalry with a group of six on Saturday. Sibling Rivalry's menu pits two chefs - brothers David and Bob Kinkead - against each other to concoct entrees and appetizers with similar themes. Each of the brothers impressed. The food was great and inventive, the dining room was cool and jovial, and the service was excellent. Everyone approved and had a great time. Especially after enjoying some Blueberry Mojitos from the bar.
Prior to catching the 4th of July fireworks, we tried out Aquitaine in the South End. The flavorings of all courses were delightful, including the Seared Tuna Nicoise and the Steak Au Poivre. The desserts were great, the service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. The dining room got a little crowded, but overall we had a great experience.
On Monday night, we treated ourselves to dinner at L'Espalier. As always, the food and service were impeccable. We particularly enjoyed the Skip's Island Creek Oysters, the Grilled Lovejoy Farms Lamb, and the River Rock Farm Beef Striploin. Chef Frank McClelland made a brief appearance, visiting each of the tables in our dining room.
For breakfast this morning, we were surprised and delighted to find a little piece of Paris in the heart of Back Bay. Brasserie Jo is a French bistro operating out of Boston's Colonnade Hotel, open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you're looking for a different breakfast option, try the breakfast crepe with egg, cheese, and ham. Brasserie Jo also offers an extensive menu for all meals and an authentic Parisian ambiance.
We spent the weekend in Narragansett, Rhode Island his week and had some great seafood. I had a nice juicy lobster and some outstanding steamers at Twin Willows on Saturday. We then made our way over to Brickley's Ice Cream, which offers an excellent selection of tasty flavors. The line was long, but worth the wait. On Sunday we had some clam cakes, fried clams, chowder, and hamburgers, and cinnamon bread at Aunt Carrie's. The service was quick and the food was great. Overall, the beaches were pretty packed all weekend, but the waves made for some great boogie-boarding.
